Born in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, lives and works in Rio de Janeiro.
Artist, researcher, professor, SM works with the technologies of communication and production of images, photography, video, computer-aided systems and architectural constructions in the production of her artistic propositions.
The focus of her research is on the possibility of stimulating specific behaviors through artistic situations in order to produce space and enhance its perception in a variety of levels.
Currently developing the project “Public Domain - Artistic Interventions in Public Spaces: enhancing social interaction through computer-mediated systems”, that examines the utilization of New Media in the production of Public Art.
Starting to work with photography (1978) and video art in Rio Grande do Sul (1982), SM migrated to the digital processing of video and images (1993), since 1997 researches on interactive art, augmented reality and intelligent environments.
Adjunct Professor and researcher of the School of Fine Arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro since 1991. PhD in Visual Arts at PPGAV/EBA/UFRJ. PhD candidate at CAIIA-STAR - Center for Science, Technology and Art Research, working with artist and Prof. Roy Ascott, University of Plymouth, UK, 1999/2000; independent researcher at Temple University, School of Communications and Theater and Tyler School of Art, Sculpture Department, 1998 /1999, working with Peter D'Agostino. Member of the National Assotiation of Researchers in Fine Arts/Visual Arts, Brazil.
Recipient of the RIOARTE Grant for Art and Technology, Secretary of Culture, of the city of Rio de Janeiro, 2001-2002.; PROJECT MAC - ARTIST RESEARCHER, Prize of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Niterói, 2001; fellowship CAPES, Ministry of Education, Brazil, 1999.- Grant VIRTUOSE of CULTURE of the Ministry of Culture/MINC, 1997 and 1998.
